Public Housing (Non-HCV/Section 8) Program Waiting List

Home ]

The Public Housing Program (not HCV/Section 8) provides assistance to help low income persons afford safe, decent and sanitary housing. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides funds to the Sacramento City and County Housing Authorities to administer the program in Sacramento. Once a family becomes eligible and moves into a public housing unit, they pay a portion of their income towards the rent.  The amount they pay for rent depends on the amount of their income.

Frequently Asked Questions

What waiting lists are open?

The waiting list process has changed.  Instead of having one centralized waiting list for all of the public housing properties, there are now several separate waiting lists.  You can now apply directly to the community where you would like to live.  If you want to live in Twin Rivers, you can now apply directly to that site only.  Additionally, there is a separate waiting list for people who choose to live in properties that are “elderly only” meaning that all of the residents are aged 62 and older.  The following waiting lists are now open:

Which is best, applying online or with a paper pre-application?

It is much better to submit your pre-application on line because:

  • The online pre-application is submitted immediately.  Since pre-applications are processed in the order in which they are received, based on bedroom size, you want to get it in as soon as possible.  The paper pre-application has to be mailed in and this may take a week or longer.
  • With the online pre-application, you receive a confirmation that it was received immediately.
  • When you write on the paper pre-application, someone else may not understand what you wrote.  Some 4s look like 9s, etc.
  • Someone else has to type in the data from a paper pre-application into the database and sometimes they make errors, no matter how careful the person is.  This doesn’t happen if you are typing in the answers yourself online.
  • When you submit the pre-application online, the computer will make sure that you complete all the required fields.  If you mistakenly skip a question on the paper pre-application, there is no one to remind you to fill in the blank.
  • There are other error checks on the computer that will question some typing mistakes.  For example, you cannot enter your birth date with a future year.  No one is looking over your shoulder when you are completing the paper pre-application and make a mistake.

When will I hear from someone about my pre-application?

If you submit your pre-application online, you will receive an electronic confirmation number and  that is your receipt. Write down this number and keep it for your records.

How will the pre-applications be sorted?

All applicants will be placed on the waiting list in the order in which their pre-applications were received, according to bedroom size.  Families needing special accommodations will be considered separately.

If I turn in my pre-application first, will I be assisted first?

Not necessarily.  It depends on what size unit you need compared to what we have available.  It also depends if you need a rental unit with special modifications, for example a wheelchair accessible unit.

What if I am already on the Public Housing waiting list?  Should I reapply?

No, you were on the centralized waiting list.  We now have different waiting lists for different communities.  You should have received a letter in December inviting you to choose which community you’d like to live and you can be on that waiting list.  You will keep the original date and time that you applied for the centralized waiting list. If you responded to that letter identifying where you would like to live, you don’t need to apply again.

What if I am on the HCV (Section 8) waiting list?  Can I apply for public housing?

Yes. If you are already on the HCV waiting list but not on the Public Housing waiting list, you are welcome to apply for public housing.  This is a different program entirely.

What if someone in my family does not have a social security number?

Enter all 9s in the spaces.

What if I submit more than one pre-application?

Only one pre-application will be received per household per waiting list.  If you choose to apply to Marina Vista, you can only submit one pre-application for that site.  Duplicates will be eliminated.

You can apply to more than one waiting list. You can apply to Marina Vista and Alder Grove, for example.  Or you can apply to every waiting list option available.

Can I apply to more than one waiting list?

You can submit one pre-application to each separate waiting list.  Each community maintains a separate waiting list.  So you can apply to as many different waiting lists as you choose.

When will the waiting list close?

These waiting lists will remain open until further notice.  There will be announcements in the newspaper and other media in advance of closing the waiting list.
