The National Association of Large Housing Finance Agencies (NALHFA) has selected Serna Village as a winner in the 2008 Spring Awards competition in the Category of Multifamily Excellence. The Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency (www.shra.org) shares the award with Mercy Housing which developed Serna Village, Cottage Housing which developed Serna Village, and Sacramento Cottage Housing, Inc. (SCHI), which collaborates with Mercy Housing to provide the supportive services component. Serna Village is an 84-unit apartment community at McClellan, offering affordable housing to individuals and families who were formerly homeless and have successfully completed a transitional housing program. One of the biggest distinctions between SCHI and other programs is that the residents are not just recipients of housing; they are responsible participants in activities that help their community thrive. As the region’s largest long-term supportive program, the ultimate indicator of its success has been a 90 percent graduation rate, including three alumni who have succeeded in purchasing their own homes. # # #
