Oak Park Project Area
The first Trolley service in Sacramento ran
out to sleepy Oak Park in 1891, but by 1905 Oak Park and much
of the outlying area was heading toward a land boom. After the
turn of the century some of the large land grants and
properties were broken up and subdivided, investors, and
families eager to become a part of the Northern California
dream. Oak Park grew by leaps and bounds and was incorporated
into Sacramento in 1911. In decline for many years, Oak Park
is staging a revival and attempting to reclaim historic
buildings long abandoned and ignored.

Oak Park has been able to use
redevelopment to secure amenities commonly found in more
affluent neighborhoods. Redevelopment projects have improved
the area’s infrastructure, helped to preserve its historic
character, and created a better visual environment for
business and residents through street beautification and
business façade improvements.

SHRA established the 1,305 acre Oak Park Project Area in
1973. Since then, in partnership with community members and
businesses, SHRA has assembled small lots into larger parcels
that support new development; improved streets and sidewalks;
built public housing; and offered various incentives and
support for Oak Park Redevelopment Area commercial investment.
