| In 1992 the North Sacramento
community committed itself to becoming redevelopment area, and the City
adopted a Redevelopment Plan. The neighborhood chamber of commerce,
long-time residents and other local leaders also began working
aggressively to develop and implement an arts and entertainment theme for
the neighborhood.
The "Uptown Arts
District" is envisioned as a mecca for professional artists, art
collectors, interior designers, the weekend arts enthusiast, and visitors
to Sacramento. Through the combination of local leadership and
entrepreneurial spirit, niche marketing, and redevelopment resources,
Uptown is now home to more than thirty small studios and galleries as well
as large home design retailers. These businesses combine with the long
established neighborhood-serving uses to create an eclectic
pedestrian-oriented shopping district.

The 1,186-acre project area also
includes a manufacturing and commercial sector between State Route 160 and
the American River Parkway. In recent years several large retail stores
have been constructed, including Costco and Recreational Equipment
Incorporated (REI). In mid-1999, Radiological Associates of Sacramento
Medical Group consolidated disparate administrative and operational
facilities into a new $3.6 million building on Expo Parkway, and in 2001
the John Davis Company moved into a new $3.8 million facility on an
adjacent parcel. This activity, coupled with the art savvy
neighborhood-shopping district, will move North Sacramento toward
re-establishing its place as a well-known and prosperous area. |
