| The Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency has been
actively assisting communities in the Sacramento River Delta with funding
for public infrastructure and facility improvements.
The Delta Target Area Committee,
made up of residents from the towns of Hood, Courtland and Walnut Grove,
advises SHRA on project selection.
The town of Walnut Grove is located on both the east and west banks of
the Sacramento River, approximately 30 miles south of the City of
Sacramento. East Walnut Grove is the oldest section, dating back to 1850.
The Walnut Grove Redevelopment Area
was
created in 1982, in part to address the separation of land ownership from
building ownership which was a result of the state Alien Land Act of 1913
which prohibited non-citizens from owning land. Working together with the
Walnut Grove Homeowners and Merchants Association, SHRA eliminated the
split ownership situation for most of the project area.
SHRA has focused on public
improvement projects including improvements to the sewer and water system
as well as the construction of curbs, gutters and sidewalks throughout the
project area. Transportation and tourism related projects have included
the construction of a public courtesy dock, a public stairwell between river road and Market Street, and
parking on River Road. The Agency has also developed affordable public
housing in the community.
Many historic buildings have been rehabilitated through the Agency’s
Commercial Rehabilitation Rebate Program.
