| As part of the Base Closure and
Realignment Act of 1990, the Sacramento
Army Depot was scheduled for closure in early 1994. The
prospect of this base closure presented a serious challenge to the City of
Sacramento, with potential for creating an employment and development void
in an already low-income area of the City. In response, the City Council
established the Sacramento Army Depot Reuse Commission to plan for base
reuse. Between April 1992 and July 1994, the Commission considered a
number of base reuse proposals, including a minimum-security prison, a
Caltrans equipment shop, and various warehouse uses.

Army Depot Redevelopment Area,
which cover 1,420 acres of land, was adopted 1995, last amended 1998,and
expires 2025. The goals of the Army Depot Redevelopment Plan remain the
same as when the redevelopment area was adopted in March 1995. These goals
are geared toward an array of issues the area is facing including: the
promotion of new private sector investment through rehabilitating
structures and installing needed site improvements, the elimination or
amelioration of environmental deficiencies, such as insufficient
off-street parking, storm water drainage and other similar public
improvements, the development of local job opportunities and preservation
of the existing employment base, and the increase, improvement and
preservation of the City’s supply of affordable very low, low, and
moderate-income housing. |
