Redevelopment in Sacramento began in 1950 when the City Council designated a 60 block downtown survey area as “Redevelopment Area Number One.” Today, the City and County redevelopment agencies are responsible for redevelopment programs in 15 distinct areas within the City of Sacramento and nearby unincorporated areas of the County.

Five-year implementation plans have been created for the project areas. Three project areas are joint redevelopment areas that span both City and County jurisdictions.
